Vintage 15" Necklace of Graduated Mixed Milk Thermoset Plastic CASEIN Beads
This beautiful necklace features:
18 carved peach colored Casein beads with clear glass separators. (see below for history of Casein beads).
Screw in metal clasp.
Probably made in Germany in the early 1900’s.
In good vintage condition.  The string is a bit stretched but still wearable.
Casein was invented in the 1890s and was made from milk protein “stone made of milk”. It is a thermoset plastic. It cannot be molded; it must be cut or carved., Like celluloid it could imitate ivory, bone, tortoise shell, coral, amber, etc.
Trademarked names
for casein plastics include Ameroid, Casolith, Dorcasine, Galalith and Kyloid.
Testing:
Application of hot water will produce a sour-milk or wet-wool smell. Many Deco era necklaces were made of carved galalith beads, and so great care must be taken not to damage the stringing if testing such an article with hot water.

I accept PayPal as my preferred payment method. Payment must be made in full and have been cleared before the item is shipped.
SHIPPING:
Items will be shipped via USPS priority mail or USPS First Class package within 1 business day after receipt of payment (2 days at the most in extenuating circumstances). Packages over 0 are insured and charged accordingly because things can and do get lost or damaged during shipping.
Please note that if your item arrives damaged due to mishandling by the postal workers, the shipping
insurance (if included/purchased) will reimburse you for your
purchase

A
n insurance claim should be filed and a refund given (per carriers insurance policy).
Be
sure to
save the
carton
and
all the packing materials
. This is
required
in order to file a claim with the USPS.
If for any reason an item is lost by the post office, they require a waiting period before they will track the item and this is out of my control. If not located, a claim will be filed for the refund of the item. Please understand that these processes take time and I will do my best to provide everything needed from my end in a timely manner.
SHIPPING DISCOUNTS:
Shipping discounts are available when purchasing multiple items.
I am happy to ship multiple items together (when possible) for discounted shipping. To take advantage of shipping discounts, items must be paid WITH ONE PAYMENT TRANSACTION. If you are purchasing multiple items, and ebay's invoice does not automatically calculate the correct discounted shipping charge, then please request a combined shipping invoice with all your purchases listed BEFORE making payment
To keep our shipping costs reasonable and help protect the environment, we recycle shipping products - we reuse boxes and packaging.
INTERNATIONAL BUYERS:
Please note: Import duties, taxes and charges are not included in the item price or shipping charges. These charges are the buyer's responsibility. Please check with your country's customs office to determine what these additional costs will be prior to bidding or buying.
